Today was the first day of classes at my place of employment. I started out the day with an 8am meeting. It went downhill from there.
The past couple of weeks I've had to help resolve some interesting issues, and today I was deluged with the same issue.
Students who had checked out library items and either failed to return them or lost them discovered that they could NOT register for classes until they resolved the library item issue.
Many of them seemed surprised by this event. Never mind that some of the issues were overdues/lost items from January 2006 (or May 2006, or...) , or that they had received at least 2 overdue notices, one billing notice and one certified letter stating that if they did not return the item or pay the fine, they would not be able to register, graduate, or order transcripts. The minimum amount for an account block is somehwere in the neighborhood of $300.
If the student has lost the item, we work with them to approve an appropriate replacement. They can order the replacement, bring it to us, and we don't require the student to pay the entire fine -- usually a processing fee of $25 or so.
But why wait so long?

Actually we block at $30.00 -- And some folks just think they are still borrowing the item apparently. :o)

Ah. Thanks for the correction, Rustee. I feel for your staff. They really get the rough end of things now. One student described it as "being punished." Being punished???

I see you're operating under that misaprehension again that college kids can read!
