The back of our house (and back yard) faces a huuuge field. We have a wide array of birds at the feeder and the occasional deer. We've known a possum lives under our shed -- occassionally see it in winter.
Tonight we were sitting at the dinner table -- just finished dinner. Joel was perusing the New York Times Magazine and I was checking my eBay favorite stores when Joel exclaimed, "what the hell??!?!!!"
I looked out the closed sliding glass doors to see a large possum looking back at me. Quite large. Silver colored with long pink snout and an even longer tail. It watched us for a few moments, then turned and waddled under the gas grill.
Portia came into the dining room just moments after the possum left. Too bad, as it would have been interesting to see her reaction to our visitor!
I did toss some homemade bread out in the yard for the critter. Although I probably needn't. I think he's been living off our compost for sometime. Wonder when s/he'll visit again?

I know it's ridiculous of me, but possums freak me out. Their feet look like hands and they entirely unimpressed by people or any attempt to shoo them away.
You are a better sport than I (feeding them, I mean). I'm always trying to keep them away from the cat food I leave for the strays.
