I'm going to have an adventure this weekend. 35 members of my church are going to Rivendell Community on a mission trip. Some folks will be doing painting and other repair work at a battered women's shelter. Some folks will be cleaning up the Rivendell property -- trees came down last year from high winds.
And what will I be doing? I'm going to be teaching 7 women and children to knit. And... I'll be drafting patterns and hopefully sewing some clothing for a remarkable young woman who was born without legs and whose arms end above the elbow -- born with no hands. We've been writing via e-mail and she is an incredible person -- the word can't is not in her vocabulary. I'm hoping that I can draft some patterns that will suit her fashion tastes and still meet her unique needs.
At the moment, the challenge is trying to bring a "lite" version of my sewing and drafting supplies with me. I'm taking my sewing machine and serger (and the appropriate presser feet), necessary tools, necessary drafting supplies, and some fabric and interfacing I bought based on her preferences. It's quite difficult to pare down, when you're used to having an array of supplies at your fingertips. I'm bringing only the sewing machine needles I'll need. Only the rulers and tools absolutely necessary for drafting.
Oh, and my imagination and my knowledge of how a flat surface can be tailored to fit 3-D objects (that would be our bodies!).
This will be quite an adventure!!

How cool to have a place like that named after a beloved local from Lord of the Rings! That's just too cool! :) Have a great time! "One knitting needle to rule them all...."

Wow! This sounds like an amazing weekend for you. I hope you have an incredible time! I would also have difficulty prioritizing and paring down what to take... :)
And yes, I'm an Nth of a degree away to leaping to type pad. I need to get settled at the new job before I start overhauling my blog, but then? THEN? (shakes fist) Look out, world!

LG, What a great opportunity to reach out to others. Isn't it great how God can use your talents to bring joy and new clothes to other people? I can't wait to hear how the weekend went.
